NYC PaperCut - Saturday at the Market

brooklynflea1

I make no secret about the fact that I am (as cliche as it is) in love with New York City. I hope that in a past life or some alternate universe, I lived the NYC existence I am always dreaming of. I guess I love it for the reasons people always love it: change, opportunity, anonymity, freedom, speed, color, big ideas. I haven’t been able to work out living there in THIS life, but I still think about it as fondly as I think of home. Maybe one day, some great thing will drag me out east and I will live out my days endlessly exploring. Until then, I have vacation days.

This new piece is inspired by one of my favorite places and favorite daydreams about NYC - the summer flea market, particularly Brooklyn Flea. Fresh fruit. Cucumber soda. Amazing Mexican food. Antiques. Bad ass antiques. People. Noise. Sitting on the steps and watching it unfold on the hottest New York day. If I did live in the area, my wallet and my watch would be in serious trouble, because oh - I would spend time and dolla, dolla bills y’all. Every weekend, I would climb on my bicycle, load up my homegirl, Gertie and hit the streets looking for a thrill - maybe a block party (a la The Cosby Show) or maybe just an unplanned ice cream cone.

*Sigh* I know. This is a hugely romanticized view of a big, burly city from a wide-eyed midwestern girl. Shhhh - just let me keep it.

New York, New York PaperCut

Since I have a very exciting return visit to my favorite city looming, I started a new New York papercut today. It is based on a NYC papercut I did a few years ago as a gift. Obviously, it is not finished but I am happy with today’s progress. (My fingers hurt a bit though!) I’ll post photos when it’s all done! For now, I have a huge mess to clean up!

Part of the madness.

Part of the madness.

Not finished, but today's progress.

Shoe Love with Chelsea Crew

I picked up the most comfortable, amazing pair of low-wedge, Chelsea Crew oxfords on Bedford Street on a hot Brooklyn day last summer. I have been in love with Chelsea Crew shoes since. These are my latest loves.

Maximum Balloon - Groove Me ft. Theophilus London

I was just over at ModCloth and they posted Groove Me on their blog - which made me watch the vid again and eventually dig through my Theophilus London collection. This track from Maximum Balloon (Dave Sitek/TV on the Radio) is aesthetically awesome. Don’t get me wrong - it is a jam in its own musical right - but I just love looking at it. And let’s not forget the video superstar: Mr. Theophilus London. I fell head-over-heels in love with Theo as soon as he started showing up all over theFADER. I am particurlarly in love with this Brooklyn tour for Nike and of course, Accept the New. It must be painful to be so cool; he had no choice though - his name is Theophilus.

popbar, NYC

I am probably very lucky that I do not have a popbar near my house - I am constantly chasing and tackling the guys that push the popsicle carts. I am, however, considering a trip out east just to visit! Popsicle genius.

Now I am CRAVING something frozen!!! My favorite flavor: coconut (or pina colada) with shredded coconut in it, YUM.

The XX - Crystalised (Live on KEXP)

You’ve applied the pressure
To have me crystalised
And you’ve got the faith
That I could bring paradise

I’ll forgive and forget
Before I’m paralyzed
Do I have to keep up the pace
To keep you satisfied

Things have gotten closer to the sun
And I’ve done things in small doses
So don’t think that I’m pushing you away
When you’re the one that I’ve kept closest

You don’t move slow
Taking steps in my directions
The sound resounds, echo
Does it lessen your affection
No

You say I’m foolish
For pushing this aside
But burn down our home
I won’t leave alive

Glaciers have melted to the sea
I wish the tide would take me over
I’ve been down on my knees
And you just keep on getting closer

Honey, I’m Home

Ahhh, home sweet home. Actually, I’m not THAT excited about being back from my trip to NYC. I wish I had a lot more money so I could make it a sorta-permanent vacation. A girl can dream. Anyway…here are a couple happy little jams for your Thursday. xoxo.

New York, New York

I have been a total blog-slacker this week. I know this…but its sort of justified. On top of trying to purchase my first house, I was preparing for my extended weekend trip to NYC this weekend. My last visit was so fantastic that I had to get back out right away. I think I’m going to make a habit of this. See you Tuesday!

the Republic Tigers

I saw these guys in NYC last weekend when they opened for Travis. I’m not going to lie, I’m not big on watching opening acts, but I was really surprised by how good their live show was. Here’s a video from their single, Buildings & Mountains.
